Brookings Area United Way is committed to helping individuals achieve their potential and believes in preparing children for success in school and community. That is why we are partnering with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to provide children living in Brookings County with a developmentally appropriate book every month.
The more children read, the better they become at reading. It's as simple as that. Studies show that when young children are given regular "lap-time" with a nurturing adult and a good book, their vocabulary can reach 10,000 words before age 5. A child who does not receive the gift of reading typically has a vocabulary of about 3,000 words. As a community, together we can level this playing field.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library provides one book each month to children (ages 0-5) living in Brookings County whose parents or guardians register to receive them. These colorful, age appropriate books are delivered directly to the child. Each book is selected for the developmental benefits it brings - and for the fun. There is no cost to the family.
Allow 8 - 12 weeks for delivery. Not all books are shipped at the same time. Households enrolling children of different ages should expect books for each child to arrive at different times.

This Program could never happen without the continued support of so many individuals in this area! With your donations, together we will help another child to Dream more , Learn more, Care more and Be more by promoting early childhood literacy!
The local cost of the program is $30.00 per child per year. There is no fee or donation required nor is it expected for enrollment.
