Unique Collaboration Provides Brookings Youth with POWER - UP Reading Program this summer!
July 2011 ~ After the summer school program was cut from the Brookings School District's budget in 2011, youth in the district were still able to continue their education and avoid regression through a unique collaboration between Brookings Area United Way, Boys and Girls Club, the Brookings School System and St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Brookings. The Brookings School System referred children in need of further support, Boys and Girls Club provided the teaching staff, the Catholic Church provided the location and United Way provided the financial support. All supporters believe that education is the foundation for individual and community success. It was rewarding for all partners to support an opportunity that allows school-aged children the ability to build upon their academic skills that will assist them in reaching their full potential. After follow-up evaluation of the program, it was found that 100% of the 58 youth who were involved in POWER-UP maintained or improved their reading level.
Dakota Smiles Mobile Dental Program makes another visit to Brookings
April 2011 ~ Brookings Area United Way provided financail support to sponsor the Dakota Smiles Mobile Dental Program once again this year. During the week the "Dental Van" was parked in the Walmart parking lot, 33 children (ages 1 - 21 years) were served during 88 separate appointments. Over $15,000 worth of preventative and restorative dental services were provided. One of the priority areas of your Brookings Area United Way is to provide access to basic and preventative health care services and we are proud to be able to offer this service each year for the youth in our area. It is a wonderful collaboration between Delta Dental of South Dakota, Walmart and Brookings Area United Way.
United Way Supports Victims of Recent Flooding
September 25, 2010 ~ Brookings Area United Way contributed $5,000 to support the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. These funds will provide individuals who are staying at the Shelther with linen kits, comfort care kits, food, cleaning supplies and other items needed to keep the victim safe and comfortable. United Way knows that organizations like Red Cross really want to make a difference in our community. And we are honored to be a partner in helping others.
That's what we do - promote the organized capacity of the citizens in Brookings County to care for and serve one another.
